SEND Services in Buckinghamshire

South EastUnitary Authority
Council website

Buckinghamshire's SEND support system is currently navigating significant pressures, with demand for Education, Health and Care Plans growing faster than funding can sustain. The authority has issued 47% of EHC Plans within the statutory 20-week deadline, slightly below the national average of 50.3%, reflecting the strain on assessment services across the region. While the proportion of children receiving SEN support in Buckinghamshire schools remains below the national average at 12.7% compared to 14.2% nationally, the gap has narrowed considerably, indicating that more children are being identified and supported earlier. If you're new to the SEND system here, the Bucks SENDIAS Service and the local parent carer forum FACT Bucks are valuable starting points for understanding your rights and connecting with other families navigating similar journeys.

In Buckinghamshire's stretched SEND system, where more children are being identified and supported earlier, JakTrack empowers families by quietly building a clear picture of your child's daily patterns over time - starting now means you're ready when those crucial appointments or EHCP steps come around. Families tell us it brings a real sense of being prepared and in control, turning overwhelming evidence into simple insights that make you feel truly supported on this journey. Whether you're connecting with Bucks SENDIAS or FACT Bucks, JakTrack sits alongside as your steady companion. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from families about SEND support in Buckinghamshire.

You can request an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Needs Assessment through Buckinghamshire Council's SEND team by emailing [email protected]. The council will consider your request and decide whether your child's needs require a statutory assessment, which may lead to an EHCP if approved. For guidance on the process and what to include in your request, contact the Bucks SENDIAS Service on 01296 383754 or email [email protected] - they offer free, impartial advice to help you through each step.
The Bucks SENDIAS Service provides free, confidential, and impartial information, advice and support on all matters related to SEND for children and young people aged 0-25 and their parents or carers. They can help you understand SEND processes, prepare for meetings, signpost you to local and national resources, and support you if you need to appeal a decision or pursue a complaint. You can reach them on 01296 383754, by email at [email protected], or via live web chat during school term time on Mondays 1-3pm and Fridays 10am-12pm.
Buckinghamshire has 17 specialist schools dedicated to supporting children with SEND, plus an additional 11 schools with specialist SEN units and 19 schools with resource bases that provide targeted support. In total, around 4,899 pupils in Buckinghamshire have an EHCP, and a further 12,598 receive SEN Support within mainstream schools. For detailed information about which schools offer specialist provision for your child's needs, visit the Buckinghamshire Local Offer or contact the SEND team at [email protected].
The Local Offer is a comprehensive online resource that brings together information about SEND support, services and provision available in your area for children and young people aged 0-25. Buckinghamshire's Local Offer is hosted on the Buckinghamshire Family Information Service website and includes details about education, health, social care, and community support. You can access it at familyinfo.buckinghamshire.gov.uk to find the right information and support for your family.
While the search results do not specify exact timescales for Buckinghamshire's assessment process, the statutory assessment must be completed within 20 weeks from the date the local authority receives your request (unless there are exceptional circumstances). For the most up-to-date information about current waiting times and what to expect, contact the EHC Needs Assessment team at [email protected] or call the SEND team on 01296 387 047.
