SEND Services in Cornwall
SEND support in Cornwall is undergoing significant transformation as part of major national reforms that aim to make early help more accessible without families having to fight for it. The county has faced long-standing pressures on its services, but the government has committed substantial investment including cancellation of tens of millions of pounds of historic SEND debt from Cornwall Council's balance sheet, alongside a £4-billion national funding package. Every school in Cornwall will now be required to create Individual Support Plans for pupils with SEND, tailored to each child's needs rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach, while Education, Health and Care Plans remain available for children with more complex needs. If you're new to navigating SEND support in Cornwall, Cornwall SENDIASS is here to offer free, impartial advice and support to help you understand your child's rights and the options available to you.
As these changes roll out across Cornwall's schools, having a clear picture of your child's needs and progress becomes even more important - whether you're building evidence for an Individual Support Plan or preparing for conversations with specialists. JakTrack helps you do exactly that by letting you track the everyday details that matter (sleep patterns, mealtimes, behaviour) and spot the patterns that professionals need to see, all in one place. Starting early means you'll have months of real evidence to draw on when you need it, helping you feel prepared and genuinely heard in appointments rather than trying to remember everything on the spot. It's about giving yourself the tools to be your child's best advocate as support becomes more accessible in your local school. see how JakTrack can help

PrimaryGoodUnderstanding school SEND provision
Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:
Specialist School
A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.
SEN Unit
A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.
Resource Base
Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.
SEN Support (Mainstream)
Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.
