North EastUnitary Authority
Council website

In Durham, a county blending urban centres with extensive rural areas, SEND support is tailored to meet the needs of around one in five school-aged children, a proportion higher than the national average, reflecting a committed local response to growing demand. The area benefits from a comprehensive SEND Strategy for 2022-24 and supporting action plans that emphasise joint working across education, health, and care, alongside strengths like higher-than-average apprenticeship uptake for young people aged 16-17. Parents can access impartial guidance through the Durham SEND Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS), helping navigate this evolving landscape with confidence.

In Durham's evolving SEND landscape, where joint working across services is key, JakTrack empowers families to feel prepared and in control by quietly building a rich evidence base from everyday moments like sleep, meals, and behaviour. Starting early means those higher apprenticeship opportunities for 16-17 year olds become tangible goals, as AI insights reveal patterns and ready you for EHCP reviews or appointments with calm confidence. You'll walk into every meeting supported, not scrambling, knowing your child's story is organised and at your fingertips. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from families about SEND support in Durham.

You can request an Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessment from Durham County Council if you think your child needs an EHCP. Contact the council directly or get free advice from Durham SENDIASS on how to make the request, including providing evidence like school reports and your child's needs. The council must decide within 6 weeks whether to carry out the assessment.
Durham SEND Information Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) offers free, impartial information, advice, and support to children, young people, and parents about special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They can help with the EHCP process, resolving disagreements with the local authority, and understanding your rights. Call 03000 267 007 or email [email protected] for support.
Durham has 17 specialist schools for children with SEND, plus 5 schools with SEN units and 14 with resource bases. These provisions support the 3,826 pupils with EHCPs out of 75,080 total pupils. Check the Durham Local Offer for details on specific schools and placements.
The Local Offer is a guide from Durham County Council listing all SEND services, support, and provisions available for children and young people aged 0-25. It covers education, health, and care options to help you find what's right for your child. Visit www.countydurhamfamilies.info for Durham's Local Offer.
Durham County Council must decide on your EHC needs assessment request within 6 weeks. If approved, the full assessment and issuing of the final EHCP should take up to 20 weeks from the initial request. Contact Durham SENDIASS for help tracking progress or if timelines are delayed.
