Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from families about SEND support in Essex.

Essex SENDIASS (Special Educational Needs and Disability Information, Advice and Support Service) is a free, confidential and impartial service that helps parents, carers, and young people (aged 0-25) with questions about special educational needs and disability. They can support you with information about education options, understanding the EHCP process, and navigating local services. You can contact them by phone on 01245 204338 (Monday and Thursday, 10am-2pm) or email [email protected].
The Essex Local Offer is a comprehensive online resource with information about SEND support, services, and education settings available for children and young people with SEND and their families. You can access it at send.essex.gov.uk, where you'll find details about local authority services, types of education settings, and other support available in Essex.
Essex has 42 specialist schools dedicated to supporting children with SEND, plus 10 schools with specialist SEN units and 34 schools with resource bases that provide additional support within mainstream settings.[School data provided] This means there are a range of specialist provision options across the county to meet different needs.
You can request a statutory assessment for an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) through Essex County Council using their request form, which is available through the Local Offer at send.essex.gov.uk. Essex SENDIASS can also provide advice and support to help you understand the process and prepare your request - contact them on 01245 204338 or [email protected].
Many children with SEND receive support through SEN Support in mainstream schools, and Essex has specialist resource bases and units within schools that provide additional help.[School data provided] Essex SENDIASS can advise you on what support your child may be entitled to and help you understand the different options available, whether or not an EHCP is needed.
