SEND Services in Kent

South EastCounty Council
Council website

Kent, a large county council area spanning both urban centres and rural communities in South East England, is committed to strengthening SEND support through ongoing improvements like integrated services and safeguarded specialist provision. With EHCP rates slightly above the national average at around 6.2% as of early 2025, the local system reflects national trends of rising demand while narrowing the gap with England-wide figures. Parents and carers can turn to Information, Advice and Support Kent (IASK) for free, impartial guidance at any stage, helping navigate this evolving landscape with confidence.

As Kent's SEND system continues to evolve and demand grows, having the right tools to document your child's needs makes all the difference. JakTrack works quietly in the background, turning those everyday moments - how your child slept, what they ate, how they responded to a situation - into organised evidence that's ready whenever you need it, whether that's for an EHCP review, a benefits application, or simply feeling prepared for your next appointment. Starting early means that by the time you're facing a crucial decision or assessment, you've already built a clear picture of your child's patterns and needs, so you can walk into every meeting knowing you've got the evidence to back up what you know to be true. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from families about SEND support in Kent.

You can request an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) needs assessment by completing the request form available on the Kent County Council website or through your child's school. The local authority will decide within six weeks whether to carry out the assessment, and the full process can take up to 20 weeks. For support, contact Information, Advice and Support Kent (IASK) at 03000 412 412 or [email protected].
Kent's SENDIASS service, called Information, Advice and Support Kent (IASK), provides free, impartial and confidential information, advice and support for parents and carers of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They can help explain the EHCP process, support you during needs assessments, and guide you on your rights. Reach them at 03000 412 412 or [email protected].
Kent has 88 specialist schools for children with special educational needs, plus 14 schools with SEN units and 75 schools with resource bases. These provisions support the 15,586 pupils with EHCPs and 35,591 on SEN Support out of 270,731 total pupils. You can find more details on the Kent Local Offer.
The Local Offer is a guide to all the SEND services and support available in Kent for children and families, including education, health and care provisions. You can find Kent's Local Offer at www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/special-educational-needs. It helps you understand what help is out there and how to access it.
The EHCP needs assessment process in Kent can take up to 20 weeks from the request date to the final plan. The local authority decides within six weeks whether to assess, and if approved, gathers advice before issuing a draft plan. For the latest guidance, check Kent County Council's website or contact IASK.
