SEND Services in Medway
In Medway, a unitary authority in the South East blending urban and riverside communities, SEND support focuses on building an inclusive system where children and young people thrive alongside their peers, as outlined in the council's forward-looking SEND Strategy for 2025 to 2028. This strategy, co-produced with families, young people, and partners from education, health, and social care, tackles key barriers like inaccessible environments and attitudes to promote equality and independence. Parents new to the area can turn to the Medway SEND Information Advice and Support service (SENDIAS) for impartial guidance, while ongoing partnership efforts aim to deliver timely help and prepare everyone for a brighter future.
With Medway SENDIAS offering that vital impartial guidance for families stepping into this journey, JakTrack steps in as your everyday companion, quietly gathering daily insights on sleep, meals, and behaviour to help you feel prepared and in control for those key appointments and EHCP moments. As your evidence builds effortlessly over time, starting early brings a real sense of support, turning uncertainty into quiet confidence amid the council's push for independence and equality. You'll walk into every conversation knowing you're backed by patterns that truly reflect your child's needs. see how JakTrack can help

PrimaryGoodUnderstanding school SEND provision
Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:
Specialist School
A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.
SEN Unit
A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.
Resource Base
Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.
SEN Support (Mainstream)
Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.
