SEND Services in Milton Keynes

South EastUnitary Authority
Council website

Milton Keynes, a thriving unitary authority in the South East with a fast-growing population, offers SEND support that identifies fewer children overall with special educational needs than the national average of 17.3%, at 14.4%, though EHCP numbers are rising steadily like elsewhere in England. This modern urban landscape supports a range of services, including a new SEND Strategy for 2025-2028 focused on helping children and young people with SEND thrive and belong at the heart of local plans. Parents navigating this system can turn to MK SENDIAS for free, independent advice and support, knowing they're in a community committed to meeting these needs amid ongoing demographic growth.

In Milton Keynes' forward-looking SEND Strategy, where thriving and belonging are at the core, JakTrack steps in as your quiet companion, helping you feel prepared and in control as EHCP numbers rise. It gently tracks your child's daily moments, building a clear picture of patterns over time so you're supported and ready for every appointment or review - starting early means that evidence grows naturally, easing the journey ahead. Families here tell us it brings a real sense of calm amid the growth and change. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can request an Education, Health and Care (EHCP) needs assessment by writing to Milton Keynes Council's Head of SEND. Send your letter by email to [email protected] or by post to Head of SEN and Disability, Civic Offices, 1 Saxon Gate East, Central Milton Keynes, MK9 3EJ. You can contact them on 01908 254518 or email [email protected] for confidential advice.
Once Milton Keynes Council agrees to carry out an assessment, the statutory process takes up to 20 weeks from the decision to assess. This includes gathering information from professionals and parents (weeks 4-10), co-production planning meetings, consultation with schools, and issuing the final plan. The initial decision about whether to assess is made within 6 weeks of your request.
The Local Offer is Milton Keynes Council's online guide to all SEND support and services available in the area, including schools, specialist provision, and support services. You can access it at https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/schools-and-lifelong-learning/send-local-offer. It provides information about what support is available and how to access it.
Milton Keynes has 10 specialist schools, 9 schools with dedicated SEN units, and 8 schools with resource bases to support children with different needs. These specialist provisions are in addition to mainstream schools that offer SEN Support for pupils who don't have an EHCP.
