SEND Services in Newcastle upon Tyne

North EastMetropolitan Borough
Council website

Navigating SEND support in Newcastle upon Tyne can feel overwhelming, but as a vibrant metropolitan city in the North East, it offers a strong foundation with high ambition and innovative approaches across its high needs system, as outlined in the recent SEND Strategy. Newcastle approves over 90% of requests for EHC assessments - far above the 66% average of similar areas - showing a commitment to identifying and meeting complex needs, especially with early years support that spots challenges sooner than many places. While rising demand brings budget pressures, the Newcastle SEND Information, Advice and Support Service (SENDIASS) is here to guide you every step, helping connect families to the right local resources with reassurance and expertise.

That's why many Newcastle families are turning to JakTrack alongside SENDIASS support - to build the evidence that makes every conversation with professionals count. By capturing what you notice day-to-day (the sleep patterns, the meltdowns, the wins), JakTrack organises it all automatically and shows you exactly where your child's needs are strongest, so when you're sitting down with your SENCO or preparing for an EHC review, you walk in with 90 days of real, organised evidence rather than scattered notes. Starting early means that by the time assessments or reviews come around, you're not scrambling to remember what happened months ago - you've already got the picture clear, which takes the pressure off and puts you firmly in control of your child's story. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.
