SEND Services in Staffordshire

West MidlandsCounty Council
Council website

Staffordshire, a large county spanning both rural and urban areas in the West Midlands, is committed to providing strong SEND support tailored to individual needs, with children and young people holding Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) more likely to attend special schools than the national average. The county's new SEND and Alternative Provision Strategy for 2026-2029, shaped by input from over 900 parents, carers, children, young people and professionals, prioritises joined-up health and education services to deliver the right help at the right time, while addressing rising demands like growing autism diagnoses and post-16 placements. You're not alone in navigating this - ASIST (Advocacy Services in Staffordshire), the local SENDIASS, offers free, independent and confidential advice to help ensure your child's voice is heard and rights respected.

That's where JakTrack comes in. As Staffordshire works to join up health and education services, having a clear picture of your child's day-to-day patterns becomes invaluable - whether you're preparing for an appointment, building a case for support, or simply understanding what works best for them. JakTrack lets you track the everyday details (sleep, meals, behaviour) and spot patterns with AI insights, so when you sit down with professionals or navigate the EHCP process, you're walking in prepared, supported, and genuinely in control of your child's story. Starting early with this kind of evidence means you're building a stronger foundation for whatever support your child needs next. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.

The Local Offer is a guide from Staffordshire County Council listing all services and support available for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including education, health and care options. It helps parents find what's available locally in plain language. Access it at https://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/education/Access-to-learning/Local-Offer-SEND-Pathway.aspx.
The statutory EHCP assessment process in Staffordshire, like everywhere in England, aims to complete within 20 weeks from the local authority's decision to assess, though this can vary based on individual circumstances and complexity. Staffordshire SENDIASS can provide specific guidance and check progress for your case by calling 01785 356921. Always confirm timelines directly with the local authority as delays can occur.
