SEND Services in Swindon

South WestUnitary Authority
Council website

Swindon is a unitary authority in the South West of England serving nearly 38,000 pupils across 89 schools, of which 8 are specialist provisions and 16 have dedicated SEN units or resource bases. Compared to the national average, Swindon's SEND support shows both strengths and areas for development: while the authority has a lower percentage of Education, Health and Care Plans graded as inadequate, it also has fewer plans rated as good quality, suggesting a mixed picture in how well EHC Plans are being written and tailored to individual needs. If you're new to navigating SEND support in Swindon, the SIAS team (Swindon SEND information, advice and support service) can guide you through the assessment process, help you understand your child's rights, and connect you with local services and support. As a parent, you'll also find it helpful to know that Swindon has an active parent carer forum, Swindon SEND Families Voice, where families share experiences and advocate for improvements to local provision.

Whether you're turning to SIAS for guidance on assessments or connecting with Swindon SEND Families Voice to share your story, JakTrack complements that support by quietly building a clear picture of your child's daily patterns over time, so you start feeling prepared and in control from day one. There's a real comfort in having that evidence ready for appointments or EHCP reviews, helping you advocate with quiet confidence. The earlier you begin, the stronger that foundation grows, making every step feel a little less daunting. see how JakTrack can help

Understanding school SEND provision

Schools in England provide SEND support at different levels. Here's what each type means:

Specialist School

A school that exclusively educates children with SEND. Smaller classes (typically 6-12 pupils), staff trained in specific needs, and environments designed for children who need more support than mainstream can provide. Places are usually named in an EHCP.

SEN Unit

A dedicated unit within a mainstream school, staffed by specialists. Children are on the roll of the unit but may join mainstream classes for some lessons. Offers a middle ground - specialist support with mainstream social opportunities. Usually requires an EHCP.

Resource Base

Extra resourced provision attached to a mainstream school. Children are on the mainstream roll but can access additional support, equipment, and specialist staff. Some resource bases focus on specific needs like autism or speech and language.

SEN Support (Mainstream)

Every mainstream school has a legal duty to identify and support children with SEND. This includes having a SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), providing reasonable adjustments, and putting in place SEN Support plans. You don't need an EHCP for SEN Support.
